Depression Therapy for Adults
Depression Therapy in person in Salt Lake City & Online across Utah
You may be keeping up with work and responsibilities while feeling little interest in the rest of your life. Things you used to enjoy may feel flat, and ordinary tasks may take more energy than you have.
I’m Cody Merrell, LCSW, the therapist at New Heights Counseling. I provide individual therapy for adults experiencing depression. We can work on what’s making daily life difficult while exploring what you want to understand about your experience.

Understanding what you’re experiencing
Depression may involve sadness, irritability, or feeling emotionally flat. There may be a clear change you can point to, or it may be difficult to explain when things started feeling this way.
In therapy, we take time to understand what you’re experiencing, how it affects your life, and what you want help with.
Some experiences you may recognize
Low mood or numbness
Feeling down, emotionally flat, or less connected to what’s happening around you.
Low energy
Everyday tasks taking more effort, with less energy left for yourself or other people.
Withdrawal
Avoiding plans or conversations, even when part of you wants contact.
Loss of interest
Finding less pleasure in activities or time with people you previously enjoyed.
Self-criticism
Judging yourself for what you haven’t done or comparing how you feel with how you think you should feel.
Difficulty concentrating
Finding it harder to focus, make decisions, or follow through, even with familiar tasks.
Working Together
I ask thoughtful questions, offer observations, and can be direct when that’s helpful. We explore what may be contributing to your difficulties and consider practical changes that fit your current energy and circumstances.
For example, you might put off responding to a friend because you feel exhausted, then criticize yourself and find it even harder to reply. We could explore that pattern and consider a manageable way to reconnect.
Our goals may include reducing distress, making daily responsibilities more manageable, or understanding recurring patterns. We decide what deserves attention together, and I welcome questions or feedback when something doesn’t fit.
I draw on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness, and other evidence-informed approaches, guided by your concerns, preferences, and goals.
I work with adults of different identities and backgrounds. My approach is LGBTQIA+ affirming, and I welcome adults across the LGBTQIA+ community. Much of my work is with gay men.
Getting started
A free 15-minute consultation, by video or in person, gives us a chance to discuss what you’re looking for, answer your questions, and consider whether working together feels like a good fit. It’s an introductory conversation rather than a therapy appointment.
